Lost win doesn’t dampen WAU spirits

A MISSED opportunity to sweep the Perth SuperSprint by no means dampened Walkinshaw Andretti United’s spirits.

WAU was largely the team to beat at Wanneroo Raceway, and indeed Chaz Mostert crossed the line first in both Repco Supercars Championship races.

Mostert though was demoted to second place in Race 2 by virtue of a five-second penalty for an unsafe release, opening the door for Tickford Racing’s Cam Waters to grab his first win of the year.

While viewed by some as a line-ball call, Mostert simply took responsibility for misinterpreting instructions upon exiting his pit bay and copped the penalty on the chin.

“I’m a bit embarrassed to be disappointed with second,” said the two-time Bathurst 1000 winner.

“I made a small mistake in pitlane which cost us, but the car was super quick, we really deserved that win (on Sunday), I just made the wrong judgement call and I’ll own that.”

WAU team principal Carl Faux declared the squad is “in a good place” heading into next month’s Darwin Triple Crown.

“To be on the podium both days, and cross the line first on both days, was pretty special,” said Faux.

“The front-row lockout on Saturday, with Chaz on pole and Ryan (Wood) alongside him, was very special. Taking the first Ford win of the year was also great.

“We obviously picked a time to go testing and maximised the learnings from that and rolled out strong.”

Faux reserved particular praise for rookie Wood, who continues to be a revelation: “We’re seeing Woody really come of age now and it’s great that everyone can see the racer in him that we’ve always known was there.”

WAU is now second in the teams’ championship, only behind Triple Eight.
