Lowndes locked in for Adelaide F1 drive

MORE than $100 million worth of iconic cars will hit the streets of Adelaide this Sunday in the lead-up to the city’s return to the Repco Supercars Championship calendar.

The occasion will be the Shannons Adelaide Rally Victoria Park Finale, starting 3pm local time, featuring a diverse mix of luxury cars.

Following the hour-long stage will be a series of demonstration runs, including superstar Craig Lowndes driving a 1994 Footwork FA15 Formula 1 car.

Adelaide was the home of the F1 Australian Grand Prix until 1995 before the event shifted to Albert Park in Melbourne.

Lowndes’ previous F1 experience includes lapping Mount Panorama in a McLaren MP4-23 and contesting The Bend Classic aboard a Dallara F189 Cosworth.

The seven-time Bathurst 1000 winner will also partake in a high-profile roll race, driving a Lamborghini Huracan EVO against the likes of current Supercars full-timers Brodie Kostecki and Todd Hazelwood.

Kostecki will drive Erebus Motorsport’s popular Mercodore, while Hazelwood will be aboard a McLaren 720S.

It all comes ahead of the VALO Adelaide 500 running across December 1-4.

“The Shannons Adelaide Rally Victoria Park Finale is a significant event as it is the coming together of the Adelaide Rally, Adelaide Motorsport Festival and the Adelaide 500, in the first racing action on the iconic circuit since February 2020,” said event director Tim Possingham.

“It will be a great lead in into the Adelaide 500 to get people revved up for the event, featuring everything from a Formula 1 car to a V8 Supercar to classics and exotics.

“It’s a free community event, giving the Adelaide motoring and motorsport community an opportunity to attend a non-ticketed event to celebrate the return of racing to the circuit.

“Our vision is to run the Adelaide Rally in the week before the Adelaide 500 going forward, with plans to expand on the Victoria Park Finale, while the Adelaide Motorsport Festival is locked in for the week before the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix.”
