MOFFAT’S FINAL WINNER SET FOR MODEL RELEASE

THE car that Allan Moffat drove to the final race victory of his decorated career is set to be released in 1:18 scale model form by Biante Model Cars.

The four-time Bathurst 1000 victory paired with Klaus Niedzwiedz aboard one of his Ruedi Eggenberger-sourced Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworths to win the Fuji InterTEC 500 in Japan in late 1989.

Famously, the race marked Moffat’s last serious touring car race; he’d turned 50 on the Friday of the Fuji race weekend and, not wishing to race beyond that mark, quietly retired from the cockpit.

Although he’d participate in a Mazda MX-5 all-star race at the following weekend’s Macau Grand Prix, and turn laps at Bathurst in his ANZ Sierras as late as 1992, the Fuji victory marked the real close to Moffat’s competitive career behind the wheel.

The Allan Moffat Collection has been a cornerstone of Biante’s offerings for over two decades now. In fact, the company’s first 1:18 Australian race car release – Moffat’s 1971 Bathurst-winning Ford Falcon XY GT-HO Phase III – marked the first in the collection.

However, while the collection will continue, Biante said the Fuji-winning Sierra will be the last to come with a Certificate of Authenticity that has been signed by Moffat himself.

“As we all know Allan is now 80 years old and like many people his age, he is facing a battle with dementia,” Biante’s pre-order announcement read.

“While Allan is happy, comfortable and being well cared for by family and friends, it is gradually becoming more difficult for him to work his way through signing each individual certificate for each model we release.

“With this in mind and out of respect and care for Allan we are announcing that this next release in Biante’s Allan Moffat Collection will be the final model that comes with a hand-signed certificate.

“In a very fitting end to this phase in the Collection we have chosen the car that, alongside Klaus Niedzwiedz, Allan drove to his final win in his final race, the 1989 Fuji 500-winning Ford Sierra RS500.

“Using our own diecast tooling with opening doors, bonnet and hatch we feel this will surely be a welcome and valued addition to the Allan Moffat Collection.

“This however does not mean the end of the Allan Moffat Collection overall. There are still interesting items left to be produced and added to the Collection and we are working with Allan’s management on how best to continue the Collection in the most respectful way for both Allan and collectors of his very popular model cars.”
