More Supercars helmet cameras, insight for 2023

SUPERCARS will expand its new helmet camera technology to feature multiple drivers next year following a successful Adelaide trial.

The state-of-the-art camera made a successful debut during the Adelaide 500 event, used by Tickford Racing’s Cameron Waters to offer fans the chance to lap up the experience from a driver’s perspective.

Although not without some teething issues, the vision arguably outdid the Formula 1 equivalent on first impression given the clarity of picture (as opposed to perhaps a bumpier ride in F1).

The Driver’s Eye system will be fully deployed from Round 1 at Newcastle next March, courtesy of a multi-year agreement between Supercars and Racing Force International.

“We had Adelaide set for a trial of Driver’s Eye ahead of the first round of the 2023 season,” Supercars head of broadcast David Tunnicliffe told V8 Sleuth.

“Our incredible in-car camera team and the crew at Racing Force delivered a product straight away that we could use on air…. so we did!

“It was a fantastic opportunity to give viewers a sneak peek into what we have in store for the Gen3 era.

“We will have multiple cameras next year and are working with drivers and teams about who and how.”

Tunnicliffe also hinted at further technology debuting sooner than later.

“We are constantly looking at what we can do next,” he continued.

“Now we have Driver’s Eye, we are working towards even more insights from the drivers in sessions and race both from a data point of view and the drivers themselves.”

The Supercars broadcast will continue to partner with Fox Sports/Kayo and the Seven Network next year, the latter of which will again show six live free-to-air rounds.
