Morris in, Johnson out for Trans Am Round 2

NASH Morris will return to the National Trans Am Series for Round 2 next weekend at Phillip Island.

Morris was a regular in the category the past two years but sat out the 2023 season-opener at Symmons Plains in February.

Racing a Supercheap Auto Ford Mustang, he will be up against the likes of fellow Super2 Series competitor Lochie Dalton at the Island.

Missing from the 17-car field are Jett Johnson and Tim Slade.

Johnson has switched his focus to contesting Super3 in a NAPA Auto Parts Nissan Altima, while Slade was always destined to make way for Elliott Cleary in the #19 The Racing Academy Mustang.

Cleary was unable to compete at Symmons Plains due to minimum age restrictions but now has the green light to make his Trans Am debut.

James Moffat leads the standings from Garry Rogers Motorsport teammate Dalton, and Jaylyn Robotham.

“Coming out of Tassie, I think it was obvious that everyone had stepped it up a lot this year, we have got a few new teams and they are really taking it up to us here at GRM,” said Dalton.

“That means coming into the round, we were a little bit unsure; I knew it would be strong but then you’ve got the new teams right on our tails and outqualifying us.

“There are a lot of big names, Owen (Kelly) has had a very big career in America and in Australia and the same with the likes of Moffat, Brett Holdsworth and even Jaylyn is very experienced in Supercars.”

Also in action will be Tickford Racing co-driver Tyler Everingham, who was the round runner-up along with Jackson Rice in last weekend’s TA2 Kings of the North event at Hidden Valley.
