Mostert fastest in final practice, more woes for Jones/Boys

CHAZ Mostert has led the way in sixth and final practice at the Repco Bathurst 1000.

It was an uneventful, uninterrupted session until the very last minute when disaster struck for Brad Jones Racing’s #96 crew once again.

Having had multiple repair jobs yesterday after Macauley Jones crashed at the Chase in Practice 4 and then was punted by Shane van Gisbergen in qualifying, the team worked until 1:30am to be ready to rumble today.

There’s more to be done now after Jordan Boys slapped the concrete at the Grate and wound up beached in the McPhillamy Park gravel.

More broadly, Practice 6 was filled with race day preparations as competitors practiced endurance-style pit stops and double-stacking.

The expected rain held off long enough to allow for a fully dry session – a factor which deterred some Top 10 Shootout qualifiers from completing one-lap simulations.

Heavy rain is tipped to arrive before the Shootout gets underway at 5:05pm, which will feature Will Brown, Brodie Kostecki, James Courtney, Nick Percat, Will Davison, Richie Stanaway, Shane van Gisbergen, Mostert, Lee Holdsworth and Cam Waters.

That lot accounted for the top four positions in Practice 6, Mostert followed by van Gisbergen, Davison and Waters. David Reynolds was best of the rest in fifth.

Initially, 25 cars took to the track; that became 26 once the #2 Holden of Nick Percat/Warren Luff completed some last-minute work on the set-up patch.

Two did not venture out at any point: the #34 Commodore of Jack Le Brocq/Aaron Seton following a Practice 5 crash for the latter, and the #3 Mustang of Tim Slade/Tim Blanchard.

It’s been a horror couple of days for the Blanchard Racing Team, Slade having carried crash damage into qualifying yesterday which meant he could do no better than dead last on the grid.

Now, an airjack issue caused damage and forced BRT to sit out the last pre-race practice.

“Had an issue with the air jack at the beginning of the session and it’s damaged a few things in the car,” explained Blanchard.

“Just putting it back together; no point rushing, we’ve got a long race tomorrow so we’ve got to make sure we put it back together properly.

“Had a few issues yesterday as well but the car was much better this morning, back to what it felt like Thursday when we were quite quick. Confident we’ll get this fixed, we’ll be fine tomorrow.”

The top 10 from qualifying will partake in this afternoon’s Shootout; for the remainder, they’ll have to wait until a 20-minute warm-up starting 8am tomorrow.
