New Grove recruit gets 2023 headstart in Adelaide

ACCOMPLISHED engineer Grant McPherson is busily making observations in his first race weekend as Grove Racing’s technical director.

Boasting experience at various top teams, McPherson was granted an early release by Walkinshaw Andretti United to begin with the Groves in the days after the Gold Coast 500.

Reunited with former Triple Eight colleague David Cauchi, who is now Grove team principal, McPherson spoke with enthusiasm about his new chapter at the VALO Adelaide 500.

“I’m pumped. It has been a really quick few weeks at the factory getting to know the whole crew and processes and really just sinking my teeth into it,” he told V8 Sleuth.

“Now that I’m around, it’s just keep learning and observing how these guys operate.

“We’ve got a monstrous job list for the off-season.”

Grove Racing has been the key improver of the 2022 Repco Supercars Championship, improving from eighth in last year’s teams’ standings to now be battling Erebus for fifth.

The man known as ‘Shippy’ is excited to keep that trend heading towards the top end of pitlane and is grateful for the chance to hit the ground running.

“It’s great to get my eyes on the place and get a better understanding of how it operates,” McPherson said.

“It means that the off-season period, while it’s going to be massively intense with Gen3, we still have to work on all of the other racing operations stuff as well.

“It’s not just bolt those cars into this current operation; we have to improve in every aspect.”

The Penrite-backed squad enters this weekend with a 70-point advantage over Erebus, who have flagged their intentions of overhauling that deficit this weekend.

For Grove, David Reynolds carries strong street circuit form in having taken a pole position and podium at the Gold Coast, while teammate Lee Holdsworth will look to bow out in style in what is his final event as a full-timer.

Holdsworth was ninth and Reynolds 15th in a slightly abbreviated opening Adelaide practice yesterday.
