‘Not doom and gloom’ for Team 18

TEAM 18 boss Adrian Burgess felt his squad’s Perth SuperSprint was better than results showed, but further added to their need to go testing.

The Chevrolet squad is at Winton Motor Raceway today (along with the Blanchard Racing Team), with Mark Winterbottom and David Reynolds joined by their respective co-drivers Michael Caruso and Warren Luff.

Team 18 started the 2024 season in style, with Reynolds particularly impressive at the Bathurst 500 and Winterbottom collecting a second-place trophy at Albert Park.

But the wheels have loosened since then, both cars finishing in the bottom half of the field more often than not across Taupō and Perth.

While Burgess confessed they’d done a “terrible job” in New Zealand, Perth was more a case of costly qualifying dramas than an uncompetitive package.

Specifically, a mistake on the Saturday left Reynolds 19th on the grid, while Winterbottom was impeded by Ryan Wood in Sunday qualifying.

“If we can get Dave and Mark qualifying in the front few rows, we’re pretty confident we’ll be able to race there,” Burgess told V8 Sleuth.

“We have got a whole list of stuff we want to try, so the test day is crucial for us.

“We’re certainly not bloody happy with this but it’s not doom and gloom.”

Burgess admitted there will be a degree of pressure to perform at the next round – Darwin – given it’s where Winterbottom scored Team 18’s first race win 12 months ago.

He’s backing his people to rise to the challenge and rediscover its early-season form.

“We have just got to keep our head down and keep going forward,” said Burgess.

“We’re a good branch; we have got well-supported cars, we have got two good drivers, a good engineering group and great mechanics. We have just got to keep working.”
