Papis to underpin new ‘Up on the Wheel’ award

CHAMP Car race winner and international motorsport equipment producer Max Papis will sponsor a new award for the Trico Trans Am Series.

MPI’s partnership with the category comes into effect on the eve of Round 4 this weekend at Tailem Bend.

The deal will include the introduction of the MPI ‘Up on the Wheel’ award, recognising the driver who gains the most places across a Trans Am round (starting positions in each race versus finishing positions).

Winners will receive a scale-version MPI steering wheel trophy.

That’s also been applied retrospectively to the first three rounds, with Tom Davies (Sandown), Nathan Herne (Symmons Plains) and Ben Grice (Phillip Island) the inaugural recipients.

MPI will further produce custom steering wheel trophies for the overall Trans Am champion and the ‘Wheelman of the Year’ (the driver who gains the most positions over the course of the season).

“Our partnership with Trans Am in Australia, alongside our ongoing relationships with the Supercars Championship and Excel racing, are pivotal for our expansion and commitment in Australia,” said Papis.

“By providing high-quality equipment and recognising driver achievements, we aim to enhance the racing experience at all levels.”

Nestora Strintzos of the Australian Racing Group added: “The Trico Trans Am Series is proud to be associated with MPI and, with its support, facilitate unique and meaningful trophies for the drivers in Trans Am.

“As a brand founded by Max Papis – a true ‘racer’ who earned success and respect competing in the highest levels of world motorsport – MPI produces motorsport equipment that is designed by drivers, for drivers, and is an appropriate partner to acknowledge the competitors who race hard and smart through the Trans Am field.”

A 19-car Trans Am field will tackle The Bend, with track action starting tomorrow.
