Penske makes major Australian move

ROGER Penske’s automotive group will soon count a pair of Melbourne Porsche dealerships among its worldwide network of investments.

The Penske Automotive Group announced Tuesday that it is expanding its retail automotive operations into Australia with the purchase of three dealerships in Melbourne.

Two of them are marquee Porsche dealerships – Porsche Centre Brighton and Porsche Centre Doncaster – while the third is the Ducati Melbourne West motorcycle dealership at Essendon Fields.

The Penske Group has acquired the three dealerships from the Preston Motors Group and marks its latest involvement in our automotive sector.

It first entered Australia in 2013 with the purchase of the Commercial Vehicles Group, the owner of the MAN Truck, MAN Bus, Western Star and Dennis Eagle marques in Australia, for $219 million.

It was a move that Penske leveraged and activated via Supercars through majority ownership of Dick Johnson Racing from 2015 to 2020.

Penske also has a long relationship with Porsche itself, from fielding the beastly 917/30 sports car in Can-Am racing in the 1970s through the its IMSA program with the 963.

“We are delighted to announce this transaction and expand our partnership with the Porsche brand,” Randall Seymore, Penske Automotive Group’s head of international operations, said.

“For over ten years we have strategically built a diverse commercial vehicle and power systems business that operates across Australia and New Zealand based on our commitment to strong customer service.

“With this acquisition we will leverage that existing infrastructure and our significant experience in the retail automotive industry to drive growth of the Porsche brand in Melbourne by building a relationship with Porsche enthusiasts through a focus on the customer experience.”

Opened in 2009, Porsche Centre Brighton was the 12th official Porsche Centre in Australia and has long been involved in Porsche Carrera Cup Australia.

This year, its Earl Bamber Motorsport-run entries are being driven by Dale Wood and brother Glen Wood.

The purchase is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2024.
