PERCAT CUTS FIRST FORD SUPERCAR LAPS

NICK Percat has enjoyed his first taste of Gen3 Supercars machinery in a post-event Tailem Bend test today aboard the all-new Ford Mustang.

The 2011 Bathurst 1000 winner hopped behind the wheel of the Blue Oval prototype in a sign of things to come as Walkinshaw Andretti United prepares to cross the brand divide next season.

WAU’s drivers have been among the last to sample the Gen3 cars, due to the fact the team had long been weighing up which brand to align with.

That decision was finalised in May, clearing the way for Mostert to drive the all-new Ford last month at Queensland Raceway.

Now Percat has had his turn to get his head around the differences between the current and incoming generations of Supercar.

“It was great to get behind the wheel of the Mustang GT today, we’ve obviously been watching from afar for a little while, so to have the opportunity to jump in and get familiarised is nice,” said the 33-year-old.

“Racing here all weekend and then driving the Gen3 car today has given us almost a back-to-back opportunity which is cool.

“You have to manhandle the car a little bit more, which isn’t a bad thing, it’ll be awesome to see a full grid of them out there to start the season.

“Overall, nice to start to get my head around it, we will head back tonight and switch the focus to Sandown and see what we can do there in the Mobil 1 NTI Racing No. 2.”

To this point, Percat has made all 277 of his Repco Supercars Championship race starts in Holdens.
