Perkins-built Commodore to join Pukekohe field

THE field for the Archibalds Historic Touring Cars category at next month’s ITM Auckland SuperSprint at Pukekohe in New Zealand has grown with the addition of an ex-Bathurst 1000 Commodore.

Kiwi Austin McKinley purchased the ex-Chris Smerdon Commodore VS earlier this year and will run at Pukekohe in a field including a range of Group A and Super Touring cars.

The car was auctioned in April this year after previous owner Chris Spiteri sadly passed away of cancer late in 2021.

The same car featured prominently in the ‘In The Pits’ ABC documentary on V8 Supercar racing that was made in 1999.

It was built new by Perkins Engineering in 1994 as a VP Commodore for South Australian Smerdon, who raced it through the following years and had it upgraded to VR and, later, VS specification.

The car, chassis PE 020, is featured in V8 Sleuth’s ‘Perkins Engineering: The Cars 1986-2008’ book.

McKinley will be racing against a range of legends in the category.

Greg Murphy is locked in to drive the Peanut Slab Sierra and John Bowe will take the wheel of the Shell Sierra he drove at Bathurst with Dick Johnson in 1990 and 1991.

Five-time Bathurst 1000 winner Steve Richards will drive a Nissan Primera Super Tourer, while Paul Radisich will jump behind the wheel of the Wolf Racing Ford Mondeo Super Tourer.

This September’s Pukekohe event is to be the Repco Supercars Championship’s last visit to the Kiwi track prior to its recently announced closure as a motorsport venue in April 2023.
