Podium chance for in-form Fullwood

BRYCE Fullwood is on the hunt for his second Repco Supercars Championship podium after an excellent morning at Albert Park.

The Brad Jones Racing driver mastered the wet/dry conditions in the first 15-minute qualifying session this morning to grab third on the grid for Race 3 (starting 5:25pm today).

He backed that up with a strong run on Dunlop’s super soft tyre to ensure he’ll start Race 4 tomorrow out of fifth place.

“The soft tyre at the end there in the second quali, I was a bit scared – I was two seconds up and then we pitted for more tyres,” Fullwood told V8 Sleuth.

“I was like, I hope we haven’t stuffed this up. We could have had egg on our face if there was another red flag but we got the lap in.

“I was tucked right under Andre (Heimgartner)’s wing and we were both very, very even in lap time, he was fourth and I was fifth.

“Andre has had a bit of a tough weekend so far so it’s good to see him have a pep in his step after that.

“It’s really good, I’ve had a few hard knocks on my side of the garage for the last little while so it’s nice to have a bit of luck go our way and have a bit of speed.”

It bodes well given the race pace, aided by the strategy of engineer Phil Keed, shown by the #14 Middy’s Camaro already this week.

Fullwood, whose only main game podium to date came at The Bend in 2020, raced from 24th to 11th in Race 1 on Thursday and 20th to seventh in Race 2 yesterday.

“Obviously there’s dudes out there that are pretty quick but we’re starting in the right place,” said the 2019 Super2 champion.

“We’re going to do everything we can, we’re not going to give it up easy, that’s for sure. I’m looking forward to going racing.

“At least now if they have the drama with the flags I’ll be able to see the little man in the box with the flag because yesterday I had to just look at the other cars and hope to hell, so that was a shambles.

“But anyway, credit to Supercars, with this Gen3 car we can actually pass people.

“There’s a lot of passing happening and we can follow a lot better than we could with the last car. It’s been really good fun being able to race hard.”
