PremiAir outlines Supercars race engineer plan

PREMIAIR Racing will resist temptation to move its marquee engineer onto the car of race-winning recruit Tim Slade.

PremiAir is still patiently going about filling key vacancies in its squad, namely that of a team manager and a second full-time race engineer.

With Slade coming in alongside impressive incumbent James Golding, a question mark loomed as to which car Geoff Slater would be directly assigned to.

Both Golding and Slater were signed mid-last year and finished the 2022 campaign together promisingly with Top 10 Shootout berths at Gold Coast and Adelaide.

“I think the relationship with him (Slater) and Jimmy is already established so we wouldn’t really want to upset that,” team principal Matt Cook told V8 Sleuth.

“It’s hardly even been a talking point at the moment but I just see that Geoff will stay where he is.

“We encourage the drivers to bring their own engineer in as well but to be honest, I haven’t even crossed that bridge, we’ll just leave it status quo, exactly how it is, and then Sheldon (Auhl) will start to engineer Tim.

“But at the end of the day, all overall decisions come from Geoff anyway because he is full-time and he is more senior; we’ll still carry on how we were last year.”

Auhl joined PremiAir ahead of the Perth SuperNight last year.

He is well regarded within the team but is based in Western Australia and only able to operate in a part-time capacity.

“It’s no secret we’re trying to fill that in a full-time capacity but that’s a bit of cloak and dagger stuff at the moment,” Cook said of the hunt for a second permanent race engineer.

“Obviously we have spoken to a few people but there’s nothing in concrete yet.”

Slade experienced a rotating door of engineers last year at the Blanchard Racing Team.

With Mirko De Rosa missing a chunk of the season due to back surgery, Slade cycled through the likes of Brendan Hogan, Mathew Nilsson and Chris Fitzgerald.

PremiAir will contest the Liqui Moly Bathurst 12 Hour on February 3-5 with Golding joined by Audi factory driver Frederic Vervisch and car owner Brad Schumacher.
