PremiAir parts ways with engineering recruit

PREMIAIR Racing and leading Supercars Championship engineer Mirko De Rosa have parted ways, V8 Sleuth has learnt.

The rumour mill kicked into overdrive in recent days about the split, and PremiAir has now confirmed as much upon being approached on the matter by V8 Sleuth.

De Rosa had only been three rounds into his tenure at PremiAir, after being headhunted to guide Tim Slade’s #23 Nulon Camaro – the duo having previously formed a strong bond at the Blanchard Racing Team.

Data engineer Julia McGarry, who joined PremiAir ahead of the 2023 Gold Coast 500 after exiting Team 18, has also moved on.

Slade bounced back from a frustrating Bathurst 500 to outperform teammate James Golding at Albert Park. The veteran then qualified for both Top 10 Shootouts at Taupō, only for the subsequent races to go awry.

French ace Ludo Lacroix will be Slade’s new race engineer, while it’s understood PremiAir has recruited a data engineer from a fellow Queensland squad to take over from McGarry.

PremiAir provided the following statement:

While very thankful for his service to date, having Mirko De Rosa located in Melbourne while working as the lead engineer for the #23 PremiAir Nulon Racing Camaro has not worked out as the team and Mirko had hoped, and so the decision has been made that Mirko will step back from the role, with Ludo Lacroix taking up the role of lead engineer for Tim Slade moving forward while continuing his over-arching role as Competition Director for PremiAir Nulon Racing.

The team thanks Julia McGarry for her service but the decision has been made that a more senior Data Engineer is required in this position and details of the new appointment will be made in the coming weeks.

It’s the latest engineering change for Slade after he had a mix-and-match first season at PremiAir, working with the likes of Phillip Di Fazio, Blake Smith, Rhys Lenegan and Romy Mayer.

The latter is now Golding’s race engineer.

Slade and Lacroix worked together at Dick Johnson Racing in 2020, when the two-time race winner co-drove with Scott McLaughlin.

Lacroix’s efforts behind the scenes have been credited as a major part in Slade’s form reversal since Round 1.

Meanwhile, De Rosa and McGarry become free agents in the Supercars engineering market.

De Rosa engineered Anton De Pasquale’s maiden victory with Erebus Motorsport in 2020 before becoming a centrepiece of BRT as it went out on its own in 2021.

McGarry has had stints at Triple Eight, Matt Stone Racing, Team 18 and PremiAir.
