Randle’s white-knuckle WRC experience

THOMAS Randle has reflected on his recent taste of the World Rally Championship.

The Supercars/WRC combination is a hot topic right now, with Shane van Gisbergen in the midst of his debut in the latter.

Van Gisbergen made a strong immediate impression at the Repco Rally New Zealand yesterday, placing 11th overall and second in the WRC2 class on the short 1.78km super special stage in Auckland to kickstart proceedings.

Friday action has already got underway.

Randle gained an appreciation for what van Gisbergen is doing courtesy of an opportunity to join an M-Sport Ford test day last month, made possible by mutual sponsor Castrol.

Randle was in the passenger seat as Gus Greensmith tore around the streets of Ypres in Belgium in his Ford Puma Hybrid Rally1 car.

“Everyone says you have got to experience it on dirt, but the test track at Ypres and the whole Belgium rally is mainly tarmac – it was still bloody nuts,” Randle told V8 Sleuth.

“We were doing 190-200km/h on back roads, single-width-lane roads with houses, telegraph poles, trees.

“He said he was pretty impressed that I had the courage to go for a hot lap with him. It was a once-in-a-lifetime thing to have that experience.

“I already respected them but that gave me an even bigger respect for what they are able to do.”

It’s at least the second time this year Randle has enjoyed some Castrol crossover, having handed his #55 Mustang Supercar over to two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso at Albert Park in April.

It has otherwise been a rough rookie Repco Supercars Championship campaign for the 26-year-old, who is 20th in the points.

There have been signs of progress though, Randle qualifying on the front row at Tailem Bend and twice starting and finishing inside the top 10 at Sandown.

He will be joined by Tickford Racing young gun Zak Best for the Repco Bathurst 1000 across October 6-9.
