Reynolds never doubted return to winners’ circle

A GRAND total of 1799 days passed between David Reynolds’ seventh and eighth Repco Supercars Championship race wins, but he insists doubt never crept in.

Since winning the final race of the 2018 season, Reynolds collected 18 second- or third-place results before finally returning to the winners’ circle on Sunday at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500.

“Never any doubt, no. Never,” declared the 38-year-old when asked by V8 Sleuth if he’d feared the victory drought might never end.

Not even when he lost the Surfers Paradise lead to a charging Brodie Kostecki on Lap 72 of 85?

“Not at all,” said Reynolds.

“I was trying to hang in as close as I could, trying to put some pressure on him and he made that small mistake down at Turn 11 and I snuck past, which is very easy to do because every other lap I was almost making the same mistake.”

Indeed, Kostecki only led two laps before being re-passed by Reynolds, who hung on thereafter helped by a Safety Car intervention and a last-lap chicane cut

Although he’ll depart in the off-season to Team 18 for the security of a long-term deal, Reynolds has consistently praised his Grove Racing crew as the hardest-working bunch in pitlane.

Grove team principal David Cauchi hailed the Braeside squad’s first win in the post-Kelly Racing era “a huge achievement”.

“I always believed in Stephen Grove and Brenton Grove and their vision, that’s why I made the jump from what was a great team and a successful career,” beamed Cauchi, previously a long-time Triple Eight engineer.

“But I believed in their vision and I wanted to work with them to be able to share what I know and bring us up to the level we need to be to win races… now the next step is to continue to win races so that we can win championships.

“That’s been clear from day one and we’re slowly building to that.”

Grove’s Gold Coast 500 success has launched it back up to seventh in the teams’ championship and it could yet make more ground at the season-closing VAILO Adelaide 500.
