Reynolds out to recapture magic in ‘second home’ race

THIS weekend’s Darwin Triple Crown could be a perfect storm for David Reynolds and Team 18, the 2017 Bathurst 1000 winner hopes.

Hidden Valley has been kind to Reynolds over the years, including being the site of his first solo Supercars Championship race win in 2015 with what is now Tickford.

He won again there in 2018 with Erebus Motorsport, and in total has four poles and six podiums in the Northern Territory.

Darwin also happens to be the happiest of hunting grounds for Team 18, Scott Pye having delivered a hat-trick of podiums there in 2020 and Mark Winterbottom breaking through for a race win last year.

“I love going to Darwin. It’s almost my second home because I’ve got some extended family up there now,” said Reynolds, who joined Team 18 in the off-season.

“It’s one of the coolest cities to visit. There’s heaps of awesome activities to do outside of racing.

“When you talk about racing, it’s actually probably one of the most successful tracks I’ve had in my life.

“I’ve had a few wins there, a few poles, lots of podiums and Team 18 last year had their first win there, so we’ve got a good track record.”

After a strong start to the season, the Mount Waverley squad’s form dipped at Taupō and Perth.

“We had a really good test the last week and we went through a lot of basic sort of things. We’re slowly understanding this car more and more,” said Reynolds.

His #20 Chevrolet will carry a tweaked livery this weekend in line with it being Supercars’ Indigenous Round.

“The Indigenous Round livery on our Tradie Beer Racing Camaro looks absolutely fantastic,” said Reynolds.

“It represents the spirit and support of our fans and the diverse communities we race in all over the country.

“I am incredibly honoured to carry this artwork, it’s a powerful reminder of the rich cultural heritage we have in Australia and it’s great to celebrate it on such a visible platform.”
