Reynolds relieved to dodge ‘gun-to-your-head’ scenario

DAVID Reynolds is making no secret of the fact he’s a fan of the revamped practice format which Supercars will use this weekend at Wanneroo Raceway.

A schedule tweak resulted in Perth practice being split across all three days of the May 17-19 event.

That differed from the initial plan of a single Friday hitout; now, a 20-minute session will precede qualifying on Saturday and Sunday.

As far as Reynolds is concerned, that’s good news.

“Normally we just roll up on a Saturday and it’s just straight into high-pressure qualifying,” said the Team 18 driver.

“Now the day starts a little bit earlier, more relaxed and you get to try a few things in your car and then go qualify.

“So you don’t have a gun to your head when you wake up in the morning thinking about qualifying on fresh tyres, you can sort of ease yourself into the day. So it’s probably good from a human standpoint and stress levels.

“It should be good for our team because the more testing work we can do in our team, the better data and better knowledge we can have, so it’s only a good thing for you.”

That might be particularly beneficial given Team 18 is out to rebound from a Taupō shocker, where it scored the second-fewest points among all teams.

“Last time for us in New Zealand wasn’t the best showing. So I hope we can turn it all around and start heading further up the grid,” Reynolds added.

Teammate Mark Winterbottom is the most experienced driver on the grid, and his Wanneroo record reads seven wins from 46 starts.

He’ll be out to use every ounce of that knowledge this weekend to get back in the hunt for silverware.

“It’s like that game of chess, push at the right time, conserve at the right time,” said ‘Frosty’.

“We have plenty of practice, really good people here at Team 18 and we’re going to have a good crack.”
