Reynolds’ ultimate praise for Tander

DAVID Reynolds has offered an insight into how Garth Tander is quickly making a different in the Grove Racing camp.

Reynolds has been reunited with Tander more than a decade on from when they last were stablemates.

A young Reynolds floated around the Walkinshaw scene from 2008 to 2010 when Tander was starring for the Holden Racing Team, although the duo never actually drove together.

They’re back on the same side following Tander’s shock off-season switch to co-drive for Grove Racing – albeit with no guarantee they’ll pair up this time either.

“Garth, I have known a long, long time,” Reynolds said.

“I was in (teammate Matt Payne’s) position and (Garth) was in my position when I first started so he was a bit of a mentor for me at the start and then we were sort of racing against each other for a long time.”

Part of Tander’s role at Braeside is to mentor rookie Payne, and the five-time Bathurst 1000 winner was on-hand for the shakedown of the Kiwi’s #19 Penrite Gen3 Mustang on February 8.

“Garth is the ultimate professional; he is one of the best drivers in our country,” Reynolds continued.

“Does not matter what he drives, he is unbelievable.

“So, to hear how he speaks about the car, even though he jumps out of the car and says a similar thing to me, he might say it in a different way that might trick the engineers into thinking a different way, so the feedback is unbelievable.”
