Richards takes on race engineering role

BATHURST legend Steven Richards is guiding rising star Thomas Sargent through his street circuit debut this weekend.

Richards is race engineering Sargent’s entry in the Adelaide round of GT World Challenge Australia.

There, Sargent is driving a Porsche 991.2 GT3 Cup car, which he took to 10th on the timesheets for Practice 2 which finished a short time ago.

The outing will provide vital mileage ahead of a 2023 international foray into Porsche Carrera Cup North America with McElrea Racing.

Sargent last weekend clinched the Porsche Sprint Challenge title, a year on from being crowned 2021 Australian Formula Ford champion.

Both of those achievements came with CHE Racing, the squad owned by future Matt Stone Racing Supercars driver Cameron Hill.

Before then he’ll have the vast experience of five-time Bathurst 1000 winner Richards to tap into this weekend.

Richards himself has tasted Carrera Cup success, winning the Australian series in 2014.

He also took a class victory at the 2012 Bathurst 12 Hour aboard a Porsche 997 GT3 Cup car.

GT World Challenge is next on track tomorrow morning, with the first of two qualifying sessions starting at 9:20am local time (9:50am AEDT).
