Rick Kelly makes Supercars cameo in Todd’s Altima

SUPERCARS champion Rick Kelly has returned to the wheel of a Supercar.

The Nissan Altima owned by Rick’s brother Todd headed to Winton Motor Raceway yesterday for a test centred around Mason Kelly.

Mason, the son of Todd, is tipped to enter the 2023 Dunlop Super3 Series.

There was time, however, for Rick to cut some laps in anger at the circuit where he took his final Supercars Championship race win in 2018.

“Today was the first time in just under two years that I’ve jumped in a Supercar and I tell you what, it put a smile from ear to ear,” the two-time Bathurst 1000 winner said in an end-of-day social media video.

“It was a pretty special day for me to bring (son) Lex to the track and show him what Supercars is all about because he was pretty young when I stopped racing.

“Also to see Todd at the track and Mason drive a Supercar; I tell you what, that was really, really cool.

“The kid can drive and I can’t wait to see what he is capable of in the future inside a car.

“But again to jump inside a Supercar around Winton was pretty special, those things are definitely fun to drive and it’s something I hadn’t done in a while so I blew the cobwebs out and had a great time.”

The 39-year-old, who retired abruptly at the end of 2020, made sporadic outings last year in the role of test and ride day driver for Kelly Grove Racing.

There is set to be some serious pedigree in Super3 next year, with third-generation racer Cameron McLeod confirmed and Jett Johnson eyeing an MW Motorsport seat.
