Ripping Yarns: Mezera’s embarrassing moment

V8 SLEUTH is celebrating the festive season with a series of great racing tales from the Motorsport News archives.

Today’s story was told by Tomas Mezera for the 400th edition of MN in 2010.

I was racing in Formula Ford at Amaroo Park in 1984.

I had not won a Formula Ford race before, and I was having a good fight with Mike Quinn. He was driving a Lola, I was in a Reynard and it was raining, pretty hard.

We took off – we were half a lap in front of the field and we got to the second-last corner. We took each other off!

I managed to recover the car, without stalling or hitting anything, and I got back onto the track.

Into the last corner, of the last lap, I could see my mates on the pitwall. I was still leading and I was going to win my first race.

I put my hand up to wave to them – but what I did not realise was that coming from off the track my tyres were full of mud.

I spun. Right around, onto the infield, and coming back from the wet grass, I was struggling to go faster than 10 kays.

After a while, I could see that car that had been third coming around the last corner. People were cheering, and he did not know that he was going to win!

It was Malcolm Oastler. He beat me to the win by half a length.

It was embarrassing – but it got worse. That evening, it made it onto the Channel 7 news! My sponsor, Dalcar, was very happy, but it was an embarrassing moment for me.

“Look at this idiot, what is he doing? Waving at his mates, and losing it!”
