Ripping Yarns: Skaife and Brock’s rental car race

V8 SLEUTH is celebrating the festive season with a series of great racing tales from the Motorsport News archives.

Today’s story was told by Mark Skaife for the 400th edition of MN in 2010.

It was at Symmons Plains, in 1993.

On Saturday night, we were driving out of the track, and I realised that the driver of the rental car in front of me was Peter Brock.

In those days, you took a windy dirt road to get back on the tarmac road, to get on the road that took you back to Launceston.

I had Fred Gibson, Jim Richards and Peter McKay in the car with me, and Brock had some lunatics in his – Mort (Graeme Brown) and someone else.

We spotted each other as we were leaving the paddock, and with the road maybe a kay and a half, it was enough for us both to give each other The Look.

We were both in Commodores, and it was Game On. The dirt road narrowed, and as we got closer to the finish line – the main road – we got more and more desperate to beat each other.

At the last corner, I fired it across the inside, I came to what I thought was a short cut, to get alongside him.

Suddenly I saw that there was about a four-foot drop off on the other side of the ‘short cut’, and I fired the renter over the top and almost, into Brock’s door.

Brock’s eyes lit up like saucers as I was about to centre-punch his door!

It tore a lot of the plastic underneath the car off, and we left it there as we raced to the gum tree on the main road.

I managed to knock him off, and the next day, he brought some of the debris back to me.

Someone had picked it up and given it to Brock, and he walked into my garage area the next morning and said, ‘I think you might need this, you may be missing something on your renter!’ He thought it was a bit unfair!

It was a bit mad, but it was good fun.
