Robotham lands international Ford drive

YOUNG gun Jay Robotham has added to his 2023 program courtesy of a racing return to Asia.

Robotham, 20, last year made his Repco Bathurst 1000 debut and is this season contesting the full Australian Trans Am Series.

He also made a one-off Super2 appearance for MW Motorsport at Newcastle, but will now dovetail his Trans Am commitments with an opportunity to compete in the Thailand Super Series’ Super Pickup category.

Robotham has been confirmed to drive a Ford Ranger, starting with the season-opener this weekend at the Chang International Circuit – home to MotoGP’s annual visit to Thailand.

Robotham sampled the Ford/CRE Ranger in a test day at Bira, before he lines up in a 48-strong field at Chang.

He has previously tasted success in Thailand as part of his 2019 TA2 Asia Series campaign.

“It’s good fun to be heading back to Thailand – the Pickups are pretty loose to drive when the boost is wound up, it’s a lot like a Trans Am car with a lot of sliding around,” he said.

“It’s a really competitive series with a lot of manufacturer involvement, and all of the cars are slightly different, so they have various strengths and weaknesses.

“Chang is the MotoGP track – it’s wide open, and track limits are pretty interesting at times.

“Bangsaen on the other hand is one of the coolest tracks I’ve ever driven. There’s a section of track that’s under permanent yellow flags, and it’s just walls; there is no runoff anywhere.

“It’s located at the beach not far from Pattaya, it has free entry, so the crowd is massive, and it’s generally a crazy event.”

Robotham sits third in the Trans Am standings after an impressive debut for The Racing Academy at Symmons Plains in February.
