Strict post-race burnout rules for Bathurst 1000

IF SHANE van Gisbergen secures the 2022 Supercars Championship at today’s Repco Bathurst 1000, he won’t be allowed to celebrate with a burnout – unless he also wins the race!

There are detailed end-of-race regulations for the Great Race, which uniquely in the Supercars Championship does not include a cool down lap.

Instead, cars are required to turn left immediately after Hell Corner and head back into the paddock via a gate on Mountain Straight.

While Bathurst’s status as the final round over the last two years meant the champion was permitted to perform a post-race burnout, only the race winner may do so this year.

There are also strict rules on how the winner’s burnout can be undertaken.

Namely, it can only be done “after passing the front row of the grid and prior to the entry of Mountain Straight gate”.

Additionally, “the car is to remain on Drivers left, moving in track direction at all times”, which means no donuts or flick turns.

Last year van Gisbergen secured the championship in bizarre circumstances at the penultimate round at Sydney Motorsport Park.

With the Sunday race washed out, van Gisbergen had an unbeatable buffer heading into the Bathurst finale.

On that occasion van Gisbergen was allowed onto the sodden track and performed a series of skids on the pit straight, which were not shown on the abruptly ended TV broadcast.

Van Gisbergen then performed his celebratory burnout post-race at Bathurst, where he finished 18th after late tyre trouble.
