Supercars kingpin talks domestic, international expansion

RACE and Supercars chairman Barclay Nettlefold has promised a bigger and better domestic calendar for 2025 before international expansion comes to the fore.

Speaking shortly after Supercars owner RACE’s 2023 calendar year financials were released, an “encouraged” Nettlefold declared a commitment to further investment.

“There’s an absolute recognition that we need to keep growing the sport, racing more – having more events, that means, in a domestic environment and also the consideration of our international plans,” he told media today.

Nettlefold did not give an exact timeline around when there will be clarity regarding a highly anticipated 2025 calendar, but noted “we are cognisant that we need to race more and we will be racing more”.

This year’s schedule features just 12 rounds; that’s tipped to grow by two for next season. And that’s before any oft-flagged overseas events are likely added.

“Everything that has happened on the international discussions to date has been inbound inquiry from promoters and sport categories,” said Nettlefold. “We are continually talking with them.

“We are working with executive now on a strategy path and plan in regards to our international expansion. I do see that to be more a 2026 full focus.

“Domestic is certainly where we are trying to really beef up our cadence around our racing and be more relevant in the marketplace.”

A committee that has been set up with Supercars squads to review and revamp the binding Teams Racing Charter could be pivotal to that, given the expense currently chained to RACE for any events beyond the core dozen.
