Supercars powerbrokers attending Indy doubleheader

SUPERCARS will have an additional presence on the ground this weekend in Indianapolis.

V8 Sleuth has learnt the championship’s CEO Shane Howard and chief strategy/revenue officer Mark Pejic will attend the doubleheader at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Former Supercars star Scott McLaughlin will line up in the IndyCar race on Saturday (local time), before 2023 title rivals Shane van Gisbergen and Brodie Kostecki compete in the NASCAR Cup Series – also on the precinct’s road course – in an 82-lapper the following day.

The presence of Howard and Pejic is understood to be two-fold.

Firstly, it’s a fact-finding mission of sorts, aimed at taking lessons from a bumper event which marks the only time all year that IndyCar and NASCAR cross paths.

That follows a similar voyage to the recent 24 Hours of Spa, completed by Shane Rudzis (Bathurst 12 Hour event director) and Paul Martin (Supercars/B12H motorsport operations manager).

Supercars also has a vested interest in Kostecki’s wildcard, given it is sponsoring his #33 Richard Childress Racing Camaro via its SuperView international streaming arm.

Supercars reported a significant spike in SuperView uptake following van Gisbergen’s win on Cup Series debut last month in Chicago, drawing American interest to the Australian-based series.

Kostecki meanwhile is tipping he’ll have his work cut out this weekend, with conquering Indy likely to be an even taller order than Chicago was for van Gisbergen.

“(Chicago) was a track that they’re not really familiar with, with walls and crazy bumps under brakes and whatnot,” he said.

“It’s a bit different. Those guys are really good at what they do and they have been to this place quite a lot, so it will be real tough.”

While van Gisbergen is destined for a full-time American switch for 2024, Kostecki is simply taking a “one day at a time” approach to his NASCAR opportunity.

“I like the racing aspect of racing every single week. Racing is my job and I love my job, so I just want to race more,” he said.
