Tander talks maiden Grove Racing laps

GARTH Tander has reflected positively on his first day behind the wheel for Grove Racing.

Tander, who will drive a Ford at this year’s Supercars enduros after 642 Repco Supercars Championship races all with Holden, joined primary drivers David Reynolds and Matt Payne at Winton for a shakedown of the #19 Penrite Mustang yesterday.

The team did encounter a hiccup in the form of a loose wheel firing Reynolds into the gravel at one stage, but Tander reported a successful maiden outing on the whole.

“Obviously a rollout of the new car and brand new regs so (there were) a couple of little teething issues but nothing that is an issue whatsoever and fixed all those,” said the five-time Bathurst 1000 winner.

“Got into performance tuning pretty quickly (and it) was good for Dave, Matt and myself to all drive the car, we all gave very similar feedback so a nice start to the Gen3 era.”

Team principal David Cauchi did not touch on the loose wheel incident in official communications provided by the Braeside squad, focusing on the accomplishment of getting its first of two cars on-track.

“Everyone has worked very hard to get these cars built so to see them now cutting laps is a real achievement for everybody,” he said.

“There’s a lot to learn, a brand-new car with new regulations.

“It’s going to be fun to start to understand the car and how to make it go fast and finetune all the little details.

“(We’re working with) the drivers and crew to understand how to operate the car efficiently and smoothly; very exciting and fun to be back at a racetrack.”

Triple Eight Race Engineering (#88 and #97) and PremiAir Racing (#31) are in action today at Queensland Raceway, taking the total tally of shaken down Gen3 race cars to eight.

Grove’s #26 Mustang is expected to debut at Winton next week.
