Tander’s record feat in Bathurst co-driver practice

GARTH Tander has laid down an impressive benchmark for Triple Eight Race Engineering with the fastest time ever set during a Bathurst 1000 co-driver session.

Tander was quickest out of the gate on a 2:06.2701s before a red flag ruined most of the field’s first flyers.

The cause was Kurt Kostecki’s beached Tradie Mustang at The Chase, which followed on from a session-ending stoppage triggered by brother Jake in Practice 1.

Once the session resumed, 45-year-old Tander wasted no time in making a statement: a stunning 2:04.1359s.

That proved miles clear of the field, Fabian Coulthard his nearest rival at 1.4557s adrift after the first post-red runs.

Tander’s time was not only quicker than Will Davison’s 2:04.3691s that topped Practice 1 – it bettered any time set during the six hours of practice at the 2021 event.

Never has there been a faster time in a dedicated Supercars co-driver session at Mount Panorama.

Bit by bit, Tander’s margin was trimmed, with Erebus Motorsport’s David Russell getting right down to a tenth off the pace approaching the halfway point.

No one would disrupt the top two; Jamie Whincup made it a one-three for Triple Eight, with Jordan Boys, Matt Campbell, Zane Goddard, Zak Best, Coulthard, Aaron Seton and James Moffat completing the top 10.

Walkinshaw Andretti United veteran Warren Luff was the second to strike trouble at The Chase, running off at high-speed to bring out another red flag inside the final 10 minutes.

Supercars action at the Repco Bathurst 1000 continues tomorrow with Practice 3 (open to all drivers) at 10:10am AEDT.

RESULTS: Practice 2, Repco Bathurst 1000 (60min)
