The round where Brown won over Erebus

SUPERCARS’ last visit to the streets of Surfers Paradise was a gamechanger for Will Brown.

In the midst of a rough Super2 season, Brown shone at the 2019 Gold Coast 600 while co-driving the #99 Erebus Motorsport entry led by Anton De Pasquale.

Tasked with starting the race after De Pasquale qualified 16th on the Saturday, Brown defied the Gold Coast’s reputation as a tough place to overtake to charge forward to eighth by the end of his stint.

The next day, he was on the back foot early after being spun on the opening lap, only to produce a fine comeback drive that De Pasquale converted into eighth at the chequered flag.

“This is probably where I got my main game drive,” Brown reflected at a Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 media call this week.

“I had an awesome co-drive here in 2019 and after that round pretty much Barry (Ryan) and Betty (Klimenko) signed me to sign on in 2021 as a main game driver.”

Indeed, Brown was guaranteed a promotion more than 12 months in advance and it would be worth the wait, taking a race win at Sydney Motorsport Park in his rookie season.

He’s now under lock and key at Erebus until at least the end of 2024.

Brown tasted victory in TCR Australia on Sunday but was in the headlines seven days earlier for his damaging Pukekohe collision with Mark Winterbottom and the subsequent confrontation which led to Erebus CEO Barry Ryan being reprimanded.

The 24-year-old is now eager to put the drama behind him.

“There was a conversation, I was probably a little bit annoyed at the time and wasn’t happy about it but we both have got over it now,” he said when asked about the matter.

“It’s racing; there’s always adrenaline and passion involved.”

Brown will be paired with Jack Perkins for the Repco Bathurst 1000 on October 6-9, with the Gold Coast’s return to the Supercars calendar following three weeks after – but now as a single-driver event.
