The story of Lowndes’ golden Holden

THE last Supercar of Craig Lowndes’ full-time career remains dressed in its special farewell #ThanksCL livery more than five years on.

Chassis 888A-049 debuted in the hands of Lowndes at the 2018 Adelaide 500 and powered the legend to a number of memorable results that season, including victory from pole position at Symmons Plains and a seventh Bathurst 1000 win.

The ZB Commodore retired along with its driver after the Newcastle finale, with Lowndes shifting to co-driver duties thereafter.

Model versions of the golden #888 Holden are available to buy in 1:18 or 1:43 scale via the V8 Sleuth Superstore.

Purchased by Scott Taylor, the car has been preserved at the Australian businessman and racer’s Gold Coast workshop – either side of it making a trip to the National Motor Racing Museum at Mount Panorama.

SLEUTHING: What happened to Lowndes’ 2022 Bathurst 1000 car?

Taylor admitted it was “a spur of the moment” acquisition and that he’d had to make a difficult decision on which livery to have the car handed over in.

“I had the choice of the Bathurst or Newcastle livery,” he explained in the V8 Sleuth-produced Triple Eight chassis book, which features this car and many more.

“Even though I liked the Autobarn Bathurst colours, we’ve kept it as it ran in Newcastle for the fact it was Craig’s last full-time drive.

“The unique livery specifically to say thanks to Craig from the team… I thought we should keep it like that.”

Lowndes will return to the Mountain this weekend to contest the Repco Bathurst 12 Hour with Tickford Racing stars Cam Waters and Thomas Randle in a Scott Taylor Motorsport Mercedes-AMG GT3.

Later in the year – after his 50th birthday – Lowndes will partner rookie Cooper Murray in a Triple Eight Bathurst 1000 wildcard.
