The Supercars drivers tackling The Mountain – again

WITH the inaugural Supercheap Auto Bathurst International now underway, V8 Sleuth brings you a guide of what to expect.

There’s plenty of drivers to keep an eye on, either from the Supercars paddock or in title battles, and three days of packed track schedules, as we explore below.

Familiar names

More than 10 drivers from this year’s Repco Bathurst 1000 grid will feature across the weekend.

Five are current Supercars primary drivers: Will Brown (TCR and Australian Production Cars), James Golding (S5000), Tim Slade, Broc Feeney and Jack Smith (all GT World Challenge).

Legend Jamie Whincup heads the list of Supercars co-drivers taking part, contesting GTWC.

Tony D’Alberto, Dylan O’Keeffe, Michael Caruso (also GTWC) and James Moffat will be on the TCR grid, while Jayden Ojeda is entered in APC.

Among other names you just might have heard of: TCM’s John Bowe and Steven Johnson, and Bathurst 1000 winner Luke Youlden who’ll race in APC.

And then there’s a sprinkling of internationals, including Frenchman Teddy Clairet (TCR) and American teen Robert Noaker (Trans Am).

Title battles

The TCR title is the biggest storyline of the weekend, Mount Panorama hosting its decider. D’Alberto holds a reduced 46-point lead over Jordan Cox, with Brown, Josh Buchan and Zac Soutar not far behind.

It’s also the season finale for APC.

As for TCM, GTWC and Porsche Sprint Challenge, the Bathurst International marks the penultimate round of their respective seasons, while it’s a non-points event for both Trans Am and the Australian Prototype Series.

S5000 will only complete exhibition laps with Golding and Cooper Webster driving, although the open-wheelers will circulate with no restrictions meaning times should be rapid.
