‘They had my back’: Larkham credits fans for Media Award

POPULAR pitlane TV pundit Mark Larkham has thanked Supercars’ fans for their support after being presented a Media Award at the Adelaide 500.

The former driver and team owner turned TV talent is the latest winner of the Supercars Media Award, handed out by the category annually.

Supercars’ formal recognition of Larkham’s on-air brilliance come three years after he was sacked by the championship’s previous management.

Larkham is loved by fans for his easily digestible analysis of complex technical topics, but was forced out amid a push to reduce the amount of technical content.

That triggered an unprecedented fan backlash and resulted in Larkham being reinstated ahead of the 2021 season.

The Media Award was sprung on Larkham by Supercars’ TV team in Adelaide, eliciting a typically humble reaction.

“I’m blown away, I had no idea,” he said.

“I’m flattered, I’m humbled, I’m honoured, but this ain’t me… this is a team of people.

“This is very cool. If I put my hand on my heart, this one’s for the fans, because they had my back a little while back.

“It gives me great personal joy and pleasure to know that they enjoy what we do and maybe learn a few things from it.

“I don’t deserve this because I’m not good at media, I’m not a media person. But I think it works because I’m simple and if you keep it simple it kind of works.”
