Tickford, Grove deliver Mustang damage verdicts

THE Mustang Supercars of both Cam Waters and Matt Payne are expected to make the grid for the final leg of the MSS Security Melbourne SuperSprint.

The duo spectacularly collided while battling for the lead on Lap 2 of the Saturday evening race at Albert Park, with both cars hitting the fence and out of action.

Waters’ #6 Monster Energy entry is the more battered of the two, having made heavy left-hand-side contact with the Turn 14 wall and ended up coming to rest with two wheels off the ground.

“Total loss of the front-left-hand corner, it’s damaged the downward bars from the middle node to the firewall, so we’ll need to cut them out because they have completely sheared off the front part of the node,” Tickford team manager Matt Roberts told V8 Sleuth.

“It actually doesn’t look too bad.

“It’s pulled bars off… it’s going to be a long night, but we have got the right guys here on the job.

“That’s the main thing: we’ll get him out there. We have got a strong race to finish off tomorrow.”

As for the #19 Penrite Ford, Grove Racing team principal David Cauchi said: “It’s not too bad. We’ll get it fixed.

“There’s a fair bit of cosmetic damage and a bit of right rear suspension damage but we’ll get it all sorted for tomorrow starting off the front row.”

Cauchi added: “Of course it’s disappointing that we were in the lead of the race and you get hit from behind and all of a sudden you’re out of the race.

“It’s really disappointing but Matt has been driving fantastic all weekend and the cars have been competitive so we’ll come back tomorrow and see if we can capitalise on that front-row start.”

Race 4 of the Melbourne SuperSprint is scheduled to comprise 14 laps, starting tomorrow at 10:25am AEDT.
