Triple Eight rues ‘unacceptable’ qualifying flops

TRIPLE Eight Race Engineering took two of the three race wins on offer at Wanneroo Raceway but left disappointed by some wildly inconsistent qualifying performances.

Team principal Jamie Whincup opted for a golf analogy to convey their assessment of the weekend.

“We pride ourselves on consistency: we don’t count the birdies, we make sure we stay out of the water, that’s the most important thing,” he told V8 Sleuth.

“Qualifying in 20th isn’t good enough.”

It was an up-and-down weekend for both of the Red Bull Ampol Camaros, with Shane van Gisbergen and Broc Feeney each taking a win from pole position but also once starting in the mid-pack and once from outside the top 20.

Erebus Motorsport by contrast took five podiums out of a possible six between Brodie Kostecki and Will Brown to extend its teams’ championship lead by 79 points.

“To get two out of three and two poles, that’s a good weekend. We just let ourselves down, qualifying at the back with both cars in different races,” Whincup added.

“It’s sweet and sour: when we perform well, we perform very well, but qualifying in the 20s is unacceptable for a team like us so we need to make sure we learn hard from that and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Nevertheless for Feeney, 20, it’s three race wins in the past four events as he more and more establishes himself as a true frontrunning force.

“He’s still very young – he should still be a rookie if we didn’t get crucified by the sport and the rule change so yeah, we still consider him a rookie in his second year,” said Whincup.

“Two wins already this year, that’s a hell of an achievement.”

Next up on the calendar is Round 4 at Symmons Plains across May 19-21.
