Van Gisbergen nabs historic global driver ranking

SUPERCARS ace Shane van Gisbergen has been recognised as one of the world’s premier talents in the prestigious Autosport Top 50 drivers of the year rankings.

Van Gisbergen is the first Supercars driver in history to crack the top 10, which takes into account all motorsport categories around the globe.

The 33-year-old enjoyed an incredible 2022, winning his third Supercars championship and taking his second Bathurst 1000 victory.

All up, van Gisbergen smashed the record for most race wins in a Supercars Championship season with 21.

His feats didn’t stop there, finishing second on Australian Rally Championship debut in April before picking up points with ninth outright (third in class) in his maiden World Rally Championship event in New Zealand.

His portfolio is about to get more diverse with a sprintcar program in New Zealand, and lingering talk of a possible NASCAR cameo next year.

In the 2022 list, van Gisbergen came in at #10, only behind Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, Kalle Rovanpera, Lewis Hamilton, George Russell, Stoffel Vandoorne, Josef Newgarden, Will Power and Lando Norris.

Among the drivers he was ranked ahead of include Joey Logano (#11), Fernando Alonso (#13), Sebastien Loeb (#25) and Scott McLaughlin (#28).

Van Gisbergen was ranked 16th in the 2021 edition and 47th the year before that – when McLaughlin, then in Supercars, came in at 13th.
