Van Gisbergen offers support to Kostecki

SHANE van Gisbergen has voiced support for his former Supercars title rival Brodie Kostecki amid news the latter will sit out the 2024 season-opener.

Little has been said publicly on the matter by the parties involved, besides short statements made yesterday afternoon by Erebus Motorsport (which confirmed Todd Hazelwood will step in for the Thrifty Bathurst 500) and Supercars CEO Shane Howard.

Van Gisbergen, who now lives in the United States and is about to embark on his first full NASCAR season, has weighed in – his opinion particularly relevant given his high-profile contract dispute in the 2012/13 off-season.

“What a sad situation to read about in Australia right now with Brodie Kostecki,” the Kiwi wrote via social media.

“I went through a similar situation 10 or so years ago – not being able to say much, plus the team and media setting the narrative out of your control is not fun.

“Full support here and hope that it works out the correct way, with Brodie enjoying driving race cars in 2024.”

Kostecki pipped van Gisbergen to the 2023 Supercars championship crown.
