Van Gisbergen’s next record-breaking feat

THE Supercars community has become accustomed to Shane van Gisbergen setting one benchmark after another in recent times – and there’s another on the way.

At next weekend’s Thrifty Newcastle 500, van Gisbergen will take the mantle of being the most experienced Kiwi driver in ATCC/Supercars Championship history.

The Triple Eight star is currently tied on 215 round starts with Fabian Coulthard, who was born in England but is a New Zealander by nationality.

With Coulthard’s next start not due until the Sandown 500 in September, van Gisbergen will go to the top once Newcastle gets underway.

He will also move into 14th on the all-time list, still some way off Craig Lowndes’ record of 300 round starts.

By season’s end, van Gisbergen should jump Mark Skaife and John Bowe to move into 12th, and given he is just 33 years of age, is well placed to climb towards the pointy end if he sticks with Supercars.

Van Gisbergen made his main game debut as an 18-year-old with Team Kiwi Racing at Oran Park in 2007.

From there, he spent five years at Stone Brothers Racing and three at Tekno Autosports before beginning his Triple Eight tenure in 2016.

His partnership with the Banyo powerhouse has thus far delivered three championships and two Bathurst 1000 victories.
