WAKEFIELD PARK ANNOUNCES CLOSURE

WAKEFIELD Park Raceway will close this week in the latest blow to the Australasian motorsport community.

With Pukekohe Park Raceway to be lost from motorsport as April next year and with Sandown seemingly not far behind, another track has now bitten the dust.

Wakefield Park, near the New South Wales town of Goulburn, opened in 1994.

Among the categories it has played host to is the Dunlop Super2 Series, which contested an annual round there from 2001-08.

However, a long-standing battle in relation to noise restrictions has led to the Benalla Auto Club today confirming the cessation of all activities from Thursday, September 1.

“Our biggest priority has been ongoing consultation and discussion with our loyal and hard-working team of staff, who are those most affected by the ceasing of circuit operations,” said BAC group general manager Stephen Whyte.

“Unfortunately, we cannot operate economically under the current restrictions, which has left us with no alternative but to cease all activity at the track.

“Further reaching will be the economic loss to Goulburn and the surrounding community.”

Whyte though hopes the fight is not over just yet.

“We remain committed to Wakefield Park and we will continue to work with the Goulburn Mulwaree Council and our stakeholders,” he added.

“We need NSW State Government assistance to find a pathway forward for Wakefield Park.”
