Walkinshaw slams Dane in parity feud

SUPERCARS’ parity saga has boiled over, with Ryan Walkinshaw launching a scathing attack on former Triple Eight supremo Roland Dane over the matter.

Dane took to his popular weekly Speedcafe column to suggest that execution was more a factor in Erebus Motorsport and Triple Eight’s 2023 success than disparity between Chevrolet and Ford.

“When I look at the results over the first four events, with 12 races complete, the real standout fact is that there are only two teams who have had any consistency at all,” he wrote.

“That’s Erebus and Triple Eight. And Erebus has clearly done, to date, the best job. All credit to them and their drivers.

“For me, it’s not so much a question of the Chevrolet domination of the podium places available to date, it’s the fact that, apart from the two teams mentioned above, no other team, Ford or Chevy, has mounted anything like a consistent challenge.”

That certainly drew the ire of Walkinshaw, whose team Walkinshaw Andretti United is in its first season with Ford.

“The mental gymnastics on show here are hilarious,” he wrote on social media.

“Roland is demonstrably and quantifiably wrong.

“This is a purposefully dishonest take and should be called out as such.

“The fans deserve not to be lied and manipulated to like this.”

An awkward element to the debate is the supposed lack of data thus far proving a lack of engine parity – which may change once a Melbourne-based transient dyno comes into use.

In any case, Walkinshaw did make clear in subsequent tweets that Supercars is trying to fix the problem.

“Engines don’t have parity that’s the point and has been proven already… hence why we are all trying to work on fixing them,” he wrote.

In a separate response, Walkinshaw added: “Nobody wants to race in a series where they feel they have an unfair disadvantage to another group of competitors.

“However I’m confident Supercars will fix the issues. It’s a matter of when, not if.

“So please stick with the sport whilst we get this all sorted.”

The next round of the season is not until June 16-18 at Hidden Valley Raceway for the Darwin Triple Crown.
