Waters, Payne react to dramatic crash

CAM Waters and Matt Payne have shared opposing views on the incident that saw them crash out while battling for the lead of Race 3 of the Melbourne SuperSprint.

Waters placed his Monster Mustang around the outside of first-placed Payne as they ran through the final corner on Lap 2, only for contact to send both into the fence and out of the race.

Waters’ car ended up parked with two wheels off the ground, and the Tickford Racing star stormed across to vent his anger towards the pilot of the #19 Penrite Mustang. Officials ruled neither party would be penalised.

“He had a pretty cool pass on me at (Turn) 11. I was going to try to get him back at 12, that didn’t happen, and 13 he just choked it up and I got in the back of him and got under him,” Waters subsequently reflected on the broadcast.

“I was just trying to set him up for the last corner and he has just come across and I was beside – I don’t know if he didn’t see I was there, but if he didn’t know I was there, it was pretty bad spatial awareness.

“Just really bad, a brand-new car, to put it in the wall and obviously his thing got damaged as well. It’s just shit.”

Polesitter Payne said: “I was just trying to race pretty fairly I thought, I didn’t really think there was any need to hit me off in the second-to-last corner to be honest with you.

“I was just trying to open up the last corner to give myself the best opportunity to get a good run onto the straight and he was there, I didn’t even know he was there.

“It’s unfortunate, like we were in a really good position obviously to win the race. It’s disappointing but it is what it is.”

The incident proved a free kick for Triple Eight duo Broc Feeney and Will Brown, who capitalised to take a one-two ahead of a slow-starting Chaz Mostert.
