Waters’ unique approach to Adelaide 500 preparations

CAM Waters’ willingness to diversify his racing portfolio has taken him into new territory in the lead-up to the VALO Adelaide 500.

A familiar face in sprintcar circles as well as Supercars, Waters headed to Winton Motor Raceway to sample a Hyper X1 Racer.

It marked an open-wheel return for Waters, the 2011 Australian Formula Ford champion.

At Winton, he recorded a best lap of a 1:16.7s – not only a track benchmark for the category but well over a second clear of either of the two-pole winning times he managed at this year’s Winton SuperSprint.

“The X1 is nimble, fast and mega responsive and generates incredible grip, and despite not having driven an open-wheel car since I raced a Mygale Formula 3 at Hidden Valley in 2012, I quickly felt comfortable and pushed as hard as I could,” said Waters.

“The Turn 5 sweeper really saw the car come into its own and being flat in fifth gear through that section of the track with the car all loaded up was a heap of fun.

“I would love to have another steer of it at some stage and I think it would be an awesome piece of kit at Phillip Island and Tailem Bend.

“I really have to thank Jon and Dean (Crooke, designers/builders of the X1) for giving me the chance to have a steer, the build quality and design thinking that has gone into the car is top rate, and I’m not surprised to hear they are selling plenty.”

Waters is on-track to be championship runner-up for the second time in his top-flight Supercars career.

He enters the Adelaide finale 175 points clear of third-placed Chaz Mostert.
