What now for Australia’s new TCR king?

NEVER had a driver without Supercars experience won the TCR Australia title – until two days ago.

The honour roll begins with Will Brown, Chaz Mostert, Tony D’Alberto… and now Josh Buchan.

Aided by a reliability mishap that swung the tide against HMO Customer Racing teammate Bailey Sweeny, Buchan overcame a 29-point pre-round deficit to be crowned champion at Bathurst.

The 28-year-old could scarcely believe it at first and only now is the reality setting in.

“I guess it can’t be taken away,” he told V8 Sleuth, his post-race celebrations having been muted by the need to drive back to Sydney on Sunday night.

“It’s a pretty prestigious title, not only locally but globally now that the World Tour has come to Australia and all those guys have kind of acknowledged that the Australian series is probably the toughest they have been to including Europe, Asia and South America.

“It’s just nice to know that’s something I’ve done and can’t be undone.”

Buchan has no intentions of abandoning TCR Australia for greener pastures next year.

“If I can continue in TCR and get that deal done locally as my base, that would be excellent,” he said.

“There’s definitely more a chance now than what there was three or four days ago to do something overseas, but it would be something dramatic if there was anything full-time over there. I’m pretty based out here.”

All going to plan, he can’t wait to run the #1 on his Hyundai Elantra TCR sedan Down Under.

“I’m not like a (Shane) van Gisbergen or (Valentino) Rossi running their own numbers, I’ll definitely have the #1. I don’t know when I’ll get another chance,” chuckled Buchan.

The seven-round 2024 TCR Australia Series will open at Sandown on February 9-11.
