Whincup to miss Tasmania SuperSprint

WHILE one Supercars team owner is making a long-awaited appearance this weekend, there will be a rare absence from another.

Erebus Motorsport founder Betty Klimenko flagged on the most recent Castrol Motorsport News Podcast episode that she’ll be at Symmons Plains to watch her championship-leading crew in action first-hand.

It’s a different story for Erebus’ chief Gen3 rivals Triple Eight Race Engineering, which will be without team owners Jamie Whincup and Jess Dane.

Whincup especially has been a fixture of the paddock for the best part of two decades, not missing a single round during 17 successive seasons as a full-time driver from the start of 2005 to the end of 2021.

He then hung up the helmet to vacate the Car #88 seat for Broc Feeney and to replace Roland Dane as Triple Eight managing director and team principal.

Whincup however will not be on deck at the Tasmania SuperSprint.

V8 Sleuth has learnt the seven-time champion is in Germany to meet with Mercedes-AMG powerbrokers.

Triple Eight was announced in late 2021 as an official partner of Mercedes-AMG, supporting its GT customer program in Australia and New Zealand.

Dane meanwhile is away in Western Australia on broadcast duties for Round 2 of the Australian Rally Championship.

It leaves veteran team manager Mark Dutton as the on-the-ground leader at Symmons Plains.

Practice 1 for the Repco Supercars Championship starts this morning at 9am AEST.
