Why officials ruled out Sunday Bathurst Shootout

A SUNDAY Shootout was considered for the Repco Bathurst 1000, Supercars race director James Taylor has confirmed.

Extreme weather forced the first cancellation of a Bathurst Great Race Top 10 Shootout in history, the session having been scheduled for 5:05pm AEDT today.

It means the starting grid will be determined based on qualifying for the time since 1988.

Motorsport Australia did however look at postponing the Shootout, rather than cancelling altogether.

“All possible aspects were covered,” Taylor said.

“It’s just not achievable with the scheduling. Tomorrow we have got to make sure it is all alright anyway.

“Best efforts were considered for all facets but it’s not achievable, the scheduling, and we have got to maintain what we have got now – the programming, et cetera, maintains for the customers and keep everyone on the schedule.

“When you have got to comply with TV rights and the satellite feed, it’s just getting too hard. But best efforts were made to try to achieve that.”

Supercars CEO Shane Howard noted an additional factor at play.

“Very difficult to be able to redirect that Top 10 Shootout and the time taken to do that, it’s a time issue for tomorrow,” he said.

“Obviously the cars run a different setup in a Shootout than a race. We don’t have the ability to really manage that in the time available tomorrow.”

Tomorrow’s schedule is set to be unchanged, including Supercars being out on track for warm-up from 8am and the race starting at 11:15am.

“The schedule will remain, unless we have issues tomorrow with the weather but the predicted weather should be fine, so long as the works they try to undertake tonight to prevent it achieve (what they are designed to do),” said Taylor.

Elaborating on those works, Taylor added: “Just making sure the drains are still functional and don’t get clogged – more preventative, and residual to clean them out to make sure they can function.”
