Why Supercars wildcards may be more enticing in 2023

THERE are two reasons why even more teams may consider fielding a wildcard in the 2023 Repco Supercars Championship.

Wildcards have become a fun addition to the grid in recent years, either as a way of blooding rising talent in a solo capacity or to facilitate big-name cameos.

Tight timeframes to get ready for testing and the Newcastle season-opener mean wildcards are probably not front of mind right now for teams … but soon enough they might be.

FEATURE: Supercars’ ultimate late bloomer

In a year where learning will be everything with the all-new Mustang and Camaro, the chance to run up to three additional test days for a wildcard could be critical.

This is in an era where testing is limited – and teams still are yet to run the Gen3 cars themselves, offering a narrow window to make sense of things before Newcastle.

Extra test days was in fact mentioned as one motivator behind Matt Stone Racing hunting a rookie to replace Todd Hazelwood, ultimately settling on Cameron Hill.

The other, lesser-discussed factor: the increased desire to have a spare chassis.

V8 Sleuth sources have noted it’s an unknown as to just how sturdy the new cars will be and whether they are more or less prone to being sidelined (temporarily or permanently) following a crash.

The ever-present walls of Newcastle might just provide an early indication come March.

Regardless, with severe penalties for any Teams Racing Charter holder who misses an event, it’s a risk teams don’t want to take – especially with a stockpile of older cars not available as had become the case in Gen2.

Triple Eight Race Engineering, Tickford Racing, Walkinshaw Andretti United and Matt Stone Racing are among the teams to have been linked with a possible wildcard campaign in 2023.
