Winterbottom on brink of all-time record

MARK Winterbottom has the chance to make an all-time ATCC/Supercars Championship record his own this weekend.

If Winterbottom can get through the three races at the Tasmania SuperSprint unscathed, that will make for a perfect 49 out of 49 finishing record at Symmons Plains.

In category history, no driver has more than 46 starts without a DNF at any given circuit.

The current record, of 46, is shared by two Supercars champions: Winterbottom (Symmons Plains and Wanneroo Raceway) and Rick Kelly (Wanneroo Raceway).

Winterbottom’s first main game appearance in Tasmania came in 2004 with Larkham Motorsport.

His Symmons record reads six pole positions, 11 podiums, 23 top fives, 34 top 10s, but only one win – for Ford Performance Racing in 2010.

Winterbottom and Team 18 are hungry to “regain a bit of momentum and get our season back on track” this weekend after a woeful Perth SuperSprint.

“After a challenging round in Perth, we’ve regrouped and are determined to bounce back stronger this weekend,” said the 2015 champion, who turns 42 today.

“Symmons Plains will be a tricky track to showcase those gains with the margins super close around there. If you find a tenth of a second you could be five or six spots up.

“Symmons Plains is a special place for Charlie and the team after we got the team’s first pole back in 2019.

“The cars and team have evolved since then but it would be great to tap into some of our learnings from that day and deliver another strong weekend for the team.

“Our aim is to unlock the potential of our car early to put ourselves in the best position for qualifying.

“We’ve hit the reset button, made some changes and if we can execute well then there’s no reason we can’t bounce back here.”

It’s a condensed two-day format this weekend, starting with Practice 1 today at 9am AEST.

Just four drivers have won a race on their birthday in ATCC/Supercars Championship history, coincidentally all of which were with the Holden Racing Team/Walkinshaw Andretti United at the time: Peter Brock, Craig Lowndes, Todd Kelly and Chaz Mostert.
