Wood doubles up in crash-affected Super2 qualifying

RYAN Wood has completed a sweep of the two Dunlop Series qualifying sessions on Friday at the Adelaide 500.

With Saturday’s pole already in the bag, a 20-minute all-in hitout decided the grid for Sunday’s Race 2.

That came in contrast to the standard protocol of running Super2 and Super3 separately in qualifying, but a decision was made for the classes to share the track given some sprinkles of rain about and cloudy skies above.

The field, reduced to 23 following Brad Vaughan’s crash earlier today, wasted little time in getting on-track in case conditions deteriorated.

What eventuated was a thrilling four-way exchange for the Sunday pole position between Wood, Walkinshaw Andretti United teammate Zach Bates, and title rivals Zak Best and Kai Allen.

Best set the initial mark at 1:20.5477s before dipping into the ‘19s’ the next time around.

Series leader Best remarkably went faster again on his next two laps, but it was a WAU one-two by the mid-point of the session.

Wood had bettered Best, only for Bates to seize the advantage with a 1:19.7301s on his final flyer before pitting.

There was more time to find with Cooper Murray looking like going to the top before locking up into Turn 9.

Others pounced, with Allen, Wood, Bates and Best each shooting to the top, before Wood landed the knockout blow: a 1:19.2800s – notably faster than the best lap recorded by the Repco Supercars Championship field earlier today.

That also secured Wood the Super2 pole trophy for the season.

There would be no further opportunities for others to respond, due to Callum Walker spinning and Nash Morris crashing while taking avoiding action.

The red flag came out with 2:35 on the clock and the session never resumed.

The order wound up Wood, Best, Bates and Allen, with the rest of the top 10 reading: Cameron Crick, Jay Hanson, Aaron Love, Aaron Seton, Murray and Matt Chahda.

Jobe Stewart again was best of the Super3 class, in 15th outright.
