Wood leads Practice 5 as Whincup crashes out

DALE Wood has survived tricky conditions to top the final dedicated co-driver practice at the Repco Bathurst 1000.

Three stoppages meant that less than 80 percent of the hour-long session proceeded under green flags – but the most notable incident was one that didn’t draw a red.

That involved seven-time Supercars champion Jamie Whincup, who crashed out early at Griffins Bend.

Whincup, who qualified Car #88 yesterday, was able to limp the Red Bull Ampol Racing entry back to the pits and that’s where it stayed for the remaining three-quarters of an hour.

Whincup’s moment came shortly after the session had resumed, Kurt Kostecki having triggered the first red flag period when he too found the Griffins Bend tyre barrier.

It’s been a tough Great Race lead-up for the Kostecki brothers, who have thrice been the cause of red flags to date.

Next to come unstuck was Matt Stone Racing rookie Aaron Seton, who made heavy contract with the wall at the Esses with 34 minutes remaining, eight minutes being lost. It was only after the subsequent resumption of play that the Castrol Mustang of Zak Best made it out on track, having been hindered early by a fuel cell leak.

Michael Caruso ended the session five minutes early when he beached his Irwin Racing Commodore at the Chase.

All the while, a number of co-drivers were impressing with Matt Campbell sitting atop the timesheets for a while before parking up.

Declan Fraser knocked Campbell off top spot, only for Fabian Coulthard to twice lower the benchmark.

Wood lobbed in a 2:26.2222s shortly before Caruso’s trouble, ensuring he put Brad Jones Racing on top.

It was in fact a BJR one-three – split only by its former race-winning driver Coulthard – with Jordan Boys a fine third.

Sixth and final practice starts at 1pm AEDT and is open to all drivers.
